Timeline paradox[edit source]

If the story is set before September 2001 (more precisely, before March 2001 because of the winter), that means Michelle Payne and the baby died at the end of 1997 summer, not in 1998. Aegirsson 10:16, April 5, 2012 (UTC)

I'm inclined to agree. 1997 does indeed seem to be the correct date, I've expanded the "Timeline" section here with some explanations and clues for such reasoning we have. I hope Rockstar will not make the mistake of contradicting the date and mention the prologue's events as having happened in 1998, as it can be quickly short-sightedly done (2001-3=1998). (That is if they will mention the date at all). Hey, in any case, I salute you for bringing this to my attention! One more step to making everything extra accurate here in this wiki as it should be. --TheBearPaw 20:49, April 5, 2012 (UTC)

Now we know the game is set in December 2001. There are no Christmas decorations in the city and the World Trade Center can be seen in the NYC skyline but we have to deal with it ! :) --Aegirsson 14:15, April 24, 2012 (UTC)

And now we know that Michelle was killed in 1998, as seen on here grave. -- Ilan (XDEditsHome ) 14:36, April 24, 2012 (UTC)

Well, this actually makes the game be set in an alternate universe where 9/11 never happened, although most likely unintentionally. In my gut, I still can't help but suspect Rockstar just did simple arithmethics 2001-3=1998 and didn't fully think this through. But, hey, I did the same mistake at first as well. --TheBearPaw 19:54, April 25, 2012 (UTC)

Actually, 9/11 DID happen in this alternate universe but simply not... on 9/11. There is no WTC in Max Payne 2 and I can assure you there will be no WTC in Max Payne 3 even if the Manhattan skyline is shown. --Aegirsson 08:40, April 26, 2012 (UTC)

The World Trade Center was actually removed from cutscenes in the PS2 and Xbox version which were released after 9/11. The PC version was released a month before 9/11, which is why the World Trade Center is seen in cutscenes. They weren't removed from the background of the final level where Max kills Horne though. Remedy must have forgotten about that level. 13:57, June 27, 2012 (UTC)
