Changes: Pain and Suffering

Pain and Suffering is the final level in Max Payne, where Max kills Nicole Horne and surrenders to the NYPD.

Max arrives at Nichole Horne's penthouse suite at the top of the Aesir Building to find her waiting for him. She tells him there's no way for him to live and escapes through a security door, leaving the Killer Suits to deal with him.

Max kills them all and takes cover behind a pillar to avoid gunfire from a helicopter.

After this, Max gets out onto the balcony and runs along a ledge onto another, avoiding more gunfire from the chopper.

Max eventually corners Horne on the top floor, but must first deal with the remaining Killer Suits. Horne, in the meantime has vanished, but Max finds the secret door she escaped through and he chases her out onto the roof.

She then goes through a security gate and locks it so Max can't get through and she boards the helicopter, but it can't take off straight away because of the wind.

As the helicopter awaits clearance to take off, Max destroys the cables holding the mast up and the mast falls onto the helicopter, killing Horne.

The police then arrives and arrests Max.

Trivia

The quote "We who are about to die" is a quote that gladiators used to salute Cesar.
The beginning of this level is the only graphic novel sequence where Max is seen holding a weapon other than a Beretta, namely a Colt Commando.
The graphic novel sequence at the end of this level also shows Max holding a Ingram
If Max fails to knock the tower over before the helicopter can take off a short cutscene will be played where Max makes an attempt to shoot it down, but the chopper shoots back and kills Max.
If the game is played on the Dead On Arrival difficulty, then a secret level can be played
