Max Payne is speaking to Mona Sax, when they are both interrupted by cleaner commandos.

Background

Max Payne wakes up from his disturbed sleep to the knock of Mona Sax on his door. Mona states that they are both in danger due to a contract out on both of them, but Max hides behind his badge, saying that he should turn Mona in. They are interrupted by a sniper who shoots through his apartment window, and Mona runs away.

Walkthrough

Payne's Apartment

Activate the window to close the blinds and prevent yourself from being sniped. From there, you have a choice about whether or not you can use the phone in your place to call Winterson for back up, it won't have any effect on the level except for a small recording later on (if you're the paranoid sort, you can call using someone else's phone). There is a bottle of painkillers next to your bed as well as some 9mm ammo in the bathroom closet; you might need them. Head out of your apartment and into the hallway. Travel down the hallway and you will see the trail left by Mona and might see her running into a stairway and barring the door behind her. Turn left when you come to the junction then continue down till you get to the end of the hallway. A woman blows a cleaner away with her shotgun. She tells you about another gun like the one she has, but searching the apartment does not yield it: you must talk to her again in order to get her to unlock the cabinet containing it. You can kill the woman to get more shotgun ammo but it's not necessery and a cop would never kill innocent people. There's also a bottle of painkillers in the other cabinet. After leaving the apartment, Max will tell her to lock the door. There is an open window in this wing leading out onto a ledge.

Apartment Crawling

Jump out of the window and onto the edge. At the second ledge four cleaners will arrive in a van and start shooting at you from the ground. It's really not worth trying to take them down, but if you feel like it you can. Walk along the edge and then jump over to the next platform, running around the corner and into the window. You can then use this spot as cover, or you can continue through the apartment complex if you feel they're not worth your time.

Go through the room and into the door to your left (you can make your 911 call from the phone on the table here if you wish).  You'll just miss the latest episode of Lords and Ladies (drat). Go through this room and out of the window on the other side. Jump on the ledge and go right then jump through the window back into the building. Use the boxes as cover and kill the three cleaners at the junction, then turn left. Follow the hallway to the end and a (possibly senile) old lady will open the door. Go into the apartment and then through the room, and be sure to search the cabinets for ammo; you'd be surprised what some of these people keep in their homes: they probably bought weapons and ammo to be safe from the cleaners' attacks. Also be sure to talk to the lady so that she will unlock the bathroom to painkillers. Go into the door on your right then go through the window on your left. Go left on the balcony then jump onto the scaffold. Climb up the scaffold and then jump in the window. You will find the sniper's apartment, littered with evidence of them watching Max's every move.

From the Sniper's Apartment

Whether or not you killed the sniper, there should be a Sniper Rifle on the floor, pick it up. On the desk there is a recording device where you can listen to your recent phone conversations. (If you called Winterson from your apartment, the first one will be of that phone call.)  Use the camera and you'll see the cleaners rigging a bomb in Max's apartment, but then accidentally blow themselves up. If you don't activate the camera, leaving the room will result in the bomb detonation in your apartment. If you go and enter the sniper's apartment but don't activate his camera, you can go back to your apartment and open the door to your living room. Then go back to the sniper's apartment. View the camera, and you will see the cleaners arm the bomb as they did before, but, they wont die, a guy will just appear wher the door use to be. Then you have the choice to leave and the game will have changed, or snipe the guys from the sniper's apartment, or go back to your apartment and kill the 3 cleaners, close the door, and oper it again, seting of the bomb. Buf some fire will only be on the window. There's also a bottle of painkillers in the bathroom/red room. As soon as you leave the room, two cleaners will be strolling towards you. Take them out then head to the stairs (when it comes into view, you'll just catch sight of a woman running for a door and locking it; take out the cleaner who scared her off).  Head up and kill the two other cleaners (one has a shotgun, so be careful), then take their ammo. Continue up to the next floor then keep going up the stairs. Continue up until you come to the 7th (top) floor with the opening ahead instead of a door. Go in the elevator on your left then push the button to make it go down to the ground floor. When you get out of the elevator you will be ambushed by cleaners chasing down a homeless man. Kill them all (spraying with Ingrams is recommended) then go down the hallway with a huge red sign marked BASEMENT. Go down the hallway then down the staircase to your right. Max will ask Ed the Janitor the access code to the seventh floor; he'll reply "667".

The "Suites"

Now go back to the elevator again (don't forget the two painkillers in the red bin before you head back upstairs). Kill the cleaners you meet en route (with extreme prejudice; they killed the homeless guy). (If you're interested, the stairs stop you at the 4th floor, but there's some shotgun and Desert Eagle ammo in the stairwells at the 3rd.)  Once you've taken the elevator all the way up, use the number pad to open the door. Walk left, and kill three cleaners (they spawn when you hear a dog bark). Enter the apartment they were coming from. At the far side of the hallway will be a living room where a woman will be watching Address Unknown (well, at least until the cleaners got to her); that woman wears the same pinafore worn by the woman who offered you one of her shotguns. In the bathroom (left side of the hallway when you enter), you will find four painkillers, and in the kitchen (opposite side of the hallway), a cleaner will be lurking. Before jumping out of the new window in the room on the other side of the kitchen/dining area, collect the ammo from the drawers and cabinets in the apartment.

Equip the Desert Eagle and kill any cleaners that might appear below you, and head left once you're outside the window. Once out side, go left and, on the wall, you will see a "M". Activate it, then continue. In the first gap, there will be two fireballs. Max will say, "Thats odd." Continue and 3 more fireballs will block your path. Follow the ledge all the way through: jump over gaps when you meet them, and at a couple points you will need to drop down a floor. Shoot any cleaners that will attack from open windows. You will eventually make your way to a open window that you should use to get back into the building. Pick up the two bottles of Painkillers found on top of a shelf and a drawer, and exit the room.

Result

Max Payne will continue through the apartment, searching for Mona and a way out.
