Max Payne is a series of third-person shooter videogames that were developed by the Finnish computer game developer Remedy Entertainment, and, currently, by Rockstar Vancouver and other studios owned by Rockstar Games, the main publisher of the series. The series is named after the main protagonist, Max Payne, introduced as a troubled DEA agent-NYPD detective waging a revenge-fueled one-man-war against various criminal organizations. The first two scripts of the games were written by Sam Lake.

The first title in the series, Max Payne, was first released in 2001 for the PC, and later for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002. A sequel entitled Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne came out in 2003 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2.

In 2008, a movie based on the series was released.

In 2009, Rockstar Games announced Max Payne 3. The game was fully released in May 2012 for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Gameplay

The franchise is notable for its use of the Bullet Time feature in action sequences. Once activated, everything around the player slows down, but is will still be able to aim just as fast as in real-time. This gives an unique and enormous advantage over the enemies.

Games

Film

In addition to videogames, the franchise was very loosely adapted into a 2008 film - Max Payne - starring Mark Wahlberg as the titular character.

Reception

The series has achieved varying levels of success. Both Max Payne and Max Payne 2 were well received by critics, having been given high scores by various game websites, such as IGN, and Metacritic. As of 2011, the two first Max Payne games have sold over 7.5 million copies. The film, however, was highly criticized and was given negative reviews but was commercially successful.
