The Jackhammer is a weapon in Max Payne. It is replaced with the Striker in Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne.
Characteristics[]
The Jackhammer is a fully-automatic shotgun with some of the highest damage output in the game, only rivalled by explosives such as the M79. It is first found in the chapter Backstabbing Bastard, carried by B.B. and his henchmen. Not many enemies are found wielding the Jackhammer and ammunition is more scarce than most weapon.
As it fills the role of a shotgun weapon, it is functionally a direct upgrade over the Pump-Action or Sawed-Off shotguns due to the Jackhammer's fire rate, 12-round capacity, and detachable cylinder which loads all 12 shots at once. Its only potential drawback is that its ammunition is seperate from the other two shotguns in the game.
The Jackhammer can kill most enemies in 2-3 hits at mid-to-close range and has a similar fire rate to a Desert Eagle.
Behind the Scenes[]
- In the real world, the Jackhammer never made it past prototyping stages and only two examples, of which one is functional, exist today.
- The Pancor Jackhammer however, has a large media presence as it has appeared in several video games other than Max Payne as a functioning firearm.
- The actual Jackhammer only fed from a 10-round cylinder (also referred to as "cassettes") rather than the in-game 12.
- As it was only an experimental design, it did not have a simple reload process as video games often depict it with.
- The in-game model of the Jackhammer is a hybrid of the two extant Pancor Jackhammers, the Mk3-A2 and the rough shoproom prototype.
- In the Max Payne 3 tie-in comic, Fight and Flight, a flashback of Max killing B.B. depicts the latter with an Mk3-A2 Jackhammer.
- Despite the actual Jackhammer being chambered for 12 gauge shotgun shells, the in-game weapon feeds from its seperate ammo pool instead of the already-existing one for the Pump-Action and Sawed-Off shotguns.
