The Beretta, or 9mm Pistol, is a weapon in Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. It is the signature weapon of Max Payne. It is superseded by the PT92 in Max Payne 3.

Characteristics[]

Max Payne[]

Although the pistol has average accuracy and damage, ammo is very abundant, and when dual-wielded the Beretta's rate of fire is second only to the Ingram. The Beretta can kill most enemies in three or four shots. In the early game, the Beretta is a general jack-of-all-trades, being servicable at close-to-mid-range but is beaten out by the Ingram and shotguns in the former, and the Desert Eagle in the latter. Later on, it is largely a backup weapon as it begins to lose effectiveness against stronger enemies.

It is frequently used by Punchinello Crime Family mobsters. Mercenaries rarely, if ever, use the Beretta, while the Killer Suits use them infrequently.

Max Payne 2[]

In Max Payne 2, the handgun is now known as the "9mm Pistol". It is largely the same as the first game, but has a slightly lower magazine capacity (16 instead of 18). It is a common weapon of the Squeaky Cleaning Company.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The model in Max Payne is not actually based on a Beretta 92FS, but rather the Reck Miami 92F, a blank-firing replica made by the German company Umarex. In Max Payne 2, it is based on a real 92FS.
  • In reality, the Beretta 92FS is not an authorised service weapon of the NYPD. In the time period the games are set in, authorised NYPD service handguns were the Glock 19, SIG-Sauer P226, and Smith & Wesson 5946.
  • The Beretta is likely an homage John Woo films, as the game takes heavy inspiration from his signature action flicks, and the 92FS is known to be Woo's favourite handgun.
  • The firing sound of the Beretta in Max Payne is also used for the Pistol in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.
