Anders Detling is an ex-police officer from Steele, North Dakota. He has moved to São Paulo along with his wife after he retired from his job, after 25 years of service. He also has a son and a daughter.
It is suggested that Anders Detling is sort of a light-hearted alternate version of Max if his wife and daughter had lived. Anders is a happy retired cop with a loving family whereas Max is a disgruntled retired cop with no family. Both made their way down to Sao Paulo for different reasons, though both end up attemping to make a difference in their situations through the game. For Anders it's helping inoculate the children in the Favela and for Max it's stopping a human-trafficking operation.
Detling meets Max Payne a few times during the latter's adventures in Sao Paulo, in 2012.
