Anders Detling is an ex-police officer from Steele, North Dakota. He has moved to São Paulo along with his wife after he retired from his job, after 25 years of service. He also has a son and a daughter.

It is suggested that Anders Detling is sort of a light-hearted alternate version of Max Payne if his wife and daughter had lived. Anders is a happy retired cop with a loving family whereas Max is a disgruntled retired cop with no family. Both made their way down to Sao Paulo for different reasons, though both end up attemping to make a difference in their situations through the game. For Anders it's helping inoculate the children in the Favela and for Max it's stopping a human-trafficking operation.

Detling met Max Payne a few times during the latter's adventures in Sao Paulo, in 2012. Their first encounter was in the disco, where while Max was attempting to stop Fabiana Branco’s kidnapping, he busted open the bathroom stall door to check if anyone was hiding, only to see Anders hiding. After some introduction, Max told Anders to stay hidden. In his narration, Max was miffed about how he is healthy and retired, in contrast to his own life.

Their second encounter was in the Nova Esperança favela, where Max noticed Anders at his child inoculation stand and the two recognized each other, with Anders noting Max’s shaved head and casual attire in comparison to his old hair and smart attire he had in the disco. Max asked about Fabiana and if he saw her at all. Anders denied seeing her at all and after wishing Max luck as well as giving him some advice, he went back inside of his stand.

Their third and final encounter was at the Piratininga Airport, where Anders hid from the ensuing violence between Max and the U.F.E.. Like their first meeting, Max bursted into Anders’ bathroom stall where he hid. Anders figured Max would show up as he was aware of Max’s habit of being involved in “chaos and guns.” After admitting he had come to pick up his daughter, who was presumably stuck on the plane due to the incident, Max admitted that he had come “to try and make a difference and give back.” After some final farewells, Max left the bathroom and Anders alone in his stall. His fate after is unknown, but it is likely he and his daughter eventually reunited after the incident ended.
