Balder was a DEA agent and friend of Max Payne. He was interested in having Max transfer out of the NYPD to help him with undercover cases, but Max declined his offer in order to spend more time with his family. After the violent deaths of Max's family, Balder helped Max investigate the circumstances behind Michelle Payne's death. Max and Balder were keeping tabs on Jack Lupino's Valkyr trafficking as of the beginning of Max Payne 1.
Involvement in Max Payne
Balder is first seen trying to convince Max to transfer to the DEA in the prologue of the game. After Max declines, Alex reminds Max to show up that night for a game of poker. In Part I, Act I: Roscoe Street Station, Balder and Max were set up by B.B. to meet at the Roscoe St. train station. They find themselves in the middle of a bank robbery; soon after they met up, Balder was shot and killed by a hidden assasin, later revealed to be B.B. Hensley. Payne was soon framed for Balder's murder.
- Balder's last name could be a possible allusion to the Norse god Baldr, God of light and peace. In Scandinavian mythology, Baldr is killed by his blind brother, Hodd, after Lief, the God of Mischief, persuades Hodd to throw a dart of holly at Baldr. Baldr's death shares many similarities with Alex's death in Max Payne.
- In the upcoming Max Payne film, Balder will be played by Donal Logue, seen in the image above.
